Creating a green-blue Perth and Peel

Wednesday 22 - Thursday 23 May 2024
The Boulevard Centre, 99 The Boulevard, Floreat, WA

The 2024 Stormwater Western Australia Awards for Excellence will be presented at this years' two day Hydropolis 2024 conference.

Hydropolis in 2024 will bring together guest speakers and delegates from some of the leading water management, planning and infrastructure organisations to exchange ideas and information, providing opportunities for participants to connect with others in the industry.

Creating a green-blue Perth and Peel

On 9 February 2024, the State Government announced it is “developing an urban greening strategy to help make Perth and Peel greener, cooler and more liveable into the future.”

As we all know, you can’t create a green city without the “blue” so Hydropolis 2024 proposes to develop a shared understanding of what a green-blue Perth and Peel looks like and explore some of the issues associated with its delivery.

Urban Greening relies upon all levels of government, organisations and individuals working together.

So, let’s get together to start exploring some of the ways we can all work together to create a green and water-sensitive Perth and Peel.

We will hear from industry experts as well as local researchers in urban greening across planning and development, environmental and community health, infrastructure delivery and operations, and maintenance and operation of local government assets and services.

The conference will also include significant opportunities for industry discussions and allow participants to identify opportunities and constraints and propose practical actions and solutions. The key points of these discussion will be recorded in a conference summary for consideration by decision makers and stakeholders.

Hosted by Stormwater WA (SWA), the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), and the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA WA), this conference provides an opportunity to drive meaningful collaboration across Perth and Peel. It is designed for professionals involved in the planning and design of blue, green, and grey infrastructure, State and local governments, the development industry and other industry stakeholders.

Stormwater Western Australia, the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (WA) and Engineers Australia, Hydrology and Water Resources Panel have launched the Code of Practice for urban and peri-urban drainage modelling in Western Australia.

Download Here

In early 2020, key stakeholders and urban drainage practitioners in WA recommended the formation of a partnership to “prepare a ‘code of practice’ or guideline which describes the process for model build, verification and reporting. The document should include guidance for different scales, planning decisions and risk, and support generation of local knowledge and improved maintenance. If possible, it should state conditions of importance for the Swan Coastal Plain and document ways to calibrate and sense-check the model. Development of the code of practice to be led jointly by SWA, Engineers Australia and IPWEA, with input from DPLH, Water Corporation, AWA, DWER, WALGA & UDIA.”

Key agencies and local governments contributed some funding and in 2022, work commenced to draft the Code of Practice in partnership with stakeholders and industry. This event is to launch the Code of Practice for urban and peri-urban drainage modelling in Western Australia, which has been endorsed jointly by Stormwater Western Australia, the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (WA) and Engineers Australia, Hydrology and Water Resources Panel.
